Delaware Boating License vs. Boating Safety Education Certificate?

Many boaters incorrectly use the term "Delaware Boating License", "Delaware Boaters License", or "Delaware Boat License" when they refer to the boating safety education certificate. In fact, the boater education card is NOT a license. The card does not expire, cannot be revoked, and never needs to be renewed, which is the case with a driver's license.

Then, how to I get the Boating Safety Education Certificate?

You can obtain the Delaware Boating Safety Education Certificate (Delaware boating license) by successfully completing the online Delaware boating safety course and passing the Delaware Boating License. What's more, once you've passed the final exam you can print out a temporary certificate, and go boating right away! The permanent certificate arrives in the mail within a few weeks after you've passed the course and exam.

So why is it called a Delaware Boating License?

Since many people are used to using the term "license" it's a natural assumption that you need a boating license to drive a boat instead of a boater education card. The Delaware Boating Education Certificate is what you need in order to drive a boat on Delaware waters.
