A. The Boating Safety Education ID Card (also sometimes
incorrectly referred to as the Florida Boaters License) is proof of competency of
the basic rules of the water that all boaters should know. If you are 21 years of
age or younger you are required to get the Boating Safety Education ID Card to operate
any powered watercraft 10 hp or more including PWCs. The Card must be carried with
you whenever you are operating a powered watercraft along with valid photo ID to avoid receiving fines.
Q. Do I have to get the Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card?
A. If you are 21 years of age or younger you are required
to get the Boating Safety Education ID Card to operate any powered watercraft 10 hp or more including PWCs.
Q. What is the minimum age to operate a Personal Watercraft (PWC) in Florida?
A. Children must be at least 14 years of age and have
successfully completed a boating safety course, approved by the Florida Fish & Wildlife
Conservation Commission, to operate a PWC on Florida waters.

A. The test consists of 60 multiple choice questions.
Q. What is the passing grade?
A. The passing grade is 80%, or 48 correct answers out
of 60 questions.
Q. Is anyone exempt from getting the Boater Safety ID Card?
A. Yes. The list of exemptions is as follows:
- Persons licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard as a master of a vessel
- Persons operating on a private lake or pond
- Persons accompanied in a vessel by a person exempt or at least 18 years of age with a valid Boater ID card provided that person is attendant to and responsible for the safe operation of the vessel
- Persons who are nonresident and have proof of completion of a NASBLA approved course
from another state.
