CHAPTER 7: Water Activities & The Marine Environment

Welcome to Chapter 7

We’re going to start this chapter by learning about some of the fun boating-related activities you can do on the water, like driving a personal watercraft. In the second half of the chapter we’ll learn how to keep the water clean so that we can continue to enjoy it for many years to come.

By the end of this chapter, you will know:

  • How a personal watercraft works and how to operate one safely;
  • Rules for towing someone behind your vessel;
  • Safety guidelines for hunting and fishing from your boat; and
  • Some of the main safety tips for canoeing and kayaking.

You will have also learned about environmental regulations, including:

  • Precautions for fueling and oil changes;
  • Procedures for garbage disposal;
  • Rules for human waste disposal; and
  • The Refuse Act of 1899
