IDNR-Approved Boating Safety Course

Before launching the Online boating safety course the BoaterExam team worked in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to ensure that all the information in the course is as accurate as possible and will thoroughly prepare students for the Iowa Boating License.

The online course contains numerous state-specific sections that highlight Iowa's boating laws, rules and regulations. These sections are highlighted in blue boxes throughout the online boating safety study guide, so watch for them! The final boating safety exam will have a minimum of 10 Iowa-specific test questions that relate to these sections.

Completing the online boating safety course will allow you to obtain your Iowa Watercraft Safety Certificate (often mistakenly called the Iowa Boating License). The Watercraft Safety Certificate is required for all operators between 12 and 18 years of age who wish to operate a powered vessel over 10hp on Iowa's waters.

Boating License or Watercraft Safety Certificate...is there a difference?

The boater education card is proof that you have successfully completed a boating safety course. The boater education card does not expire and does not need to be renewed. Therefore, it is NOT an Iowa Boating License!
