SAILING VESSELS 23 FEET OR MORE IN LENGTH

Vessels under sail must exhibit the following navigation light configurations:

BOATS LESS THAN 39 FEET, FOUR INCHES

Sailing vessels shall exhibit the navigation lights shown in either FIGURE FOUR or FIVE .

BOATS BETWEEN 39 FEET, FOUR INCHES TO 65 FEET, SEVEN INCHES

Sailing vessels shall exhibit the navigation lights shown in either FIGURE FOUR, FIVE, or SIX.

Note: A tricolor light can only be displayed while underway under sails alone and must not be used when under power whether or not sails are hoisted. This light must not be used when the regular sidelights are on. Either the sidelights or the tricolor light may be displayed, but not both.

FIGURE SIX

  • Sternlight (aft) —135 degrees visible from two miles.
  • Sidelights (either combined or separate) — 112.5 degrees visible from one mile.
  • Two all-around lights in a vertical line
    • Red upper light
    • Green lower light

Note: The two all-around red and green lights cannot be displayed in conjunction with the tricolor light.
