Understand the rules of the waterway, including navigation markers, sound signals, lighting requirements, right-of-way, and safe operating practices on the water.

Learn how to respond to capsizing, cold-water immersion, fire, collisions, and other on-water emergencies before they happen.

Explore safe participation in watersports, paddling, fishing, and other recreational activities, and understand your responsibilities for protecting the marine environment.

Cover Canadian boating laws, operator responsibilities, legal equipment requirements, and the rules you need to know to operate safely and legally on Canadian waters.

Boating in Canada

The Water Is Waiting

From the Pacific to the Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean to the Great Lakes, Canada's waters stretch farther than anywhere else on earth. Canada offers 208,080 km of coastline and 31,752 lakes larger than three square miles.

Whether you're navigating a remote archipelago off the coast of British Columbia, crossing open freshwater on the Great Lakes, or winding through historic canal systems in Ontario, there is no shortage of remarkable places to explore by boat.

Before you launch, anyone operating a motorized pleasure craft on Canadian waters must complete a Transport Canada-approved boating safety course and carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card on board. Check weather and water conditions, bring the required safety equipment, and know the local regulations before you go.

FAQs

What is the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)

The PCOC is proof of competency that shows boaters understand how to operate a boat safely. This is achieved through taking the boating safety course online or in person and passing the final exam.

How do I get a boating licence in Canada?

In Canada, you do not need a traditional driver’s licence or boating licence to operate a pleasure craft. What you need is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). This is proof that you have successfully completed a Transport Canada-approved boating safety course. Complete the BOATERexam® course, pass the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test, and print your Temporary PCOC immediately.

Is the BOATERexam Canada course approved?

Yes. BOATERexam.com® is accredited by Transport Canada to deliver boating safety courses and administer tests for the issuance of Pleasure Craft Operator Cards under the Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations.

Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card in Canada?

Anyone who operates a pleasure craft with any type of motor for recreational purposes must carry proof of competency on board. This includes boats powered by trolling motors. The PCOC is the most common proof of competency accepted across Canada.

Do I need a driver’s licence to get a Pleasure Craft Operator Card?

No. A driver’s licence is not required to operate a watercraft. You do require your Pleasure Craft Operator Card on board with you while operating a powered watercraft.

What is proof of operator competency in Canada?

Proof of operator competency can take one of three forms:

- A Pleasure Craft Operator Card;

- Proof of having successfully completed a boating safety course in Canada prior to April 1, 1999; or

- A completed rental-boat safety checklist.

A Pleasure Craft Operator Card is issued following the successful completion of an approved test and is the most common proof of competency. If you have taken a boating safety course prior to April 1, 1999, the certificate you obtained is valid, but it must clearly show that the course was taken in Canada and prior to that date. If you are renting a pleasure craft fitted with a motor, you must complete a rental boat safety checklist, which is valid for the duration of the rental period.

How much does the BOATERexam Canada course cost?

The BOATERexam Canada course fee is $59.95 CAD.

What are the boating laws in Canada?

Canadian boating laws fall under federal regulations administered by Transport Canada. All motorized pleasure craft operators must carry proof of competency. Required safety equipment includes Transport Canada-approved life jackets for every person on board, a sound-signalling device, navigation lights, and a bailer or manual water pump, among other items. Operators are responsible for the safety of everyone on board.

How long does the BOATERexam Canada course take?

Completion time varies by student. The course is self-paced, your progress saves automatically, and you can start and stop at any time. Courses must be completed within 90 days of payment.

What is the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test?

The Transport Canada Boating Safety Test is a 50-question exam covering all course material. You must score at least 75% to pass. You have 75 minutes to complete the test. If you do not pass, you may retake the test after 24 hours.
