Illinois DNR-Approved Boating Safety Course

Before launching the Online boating safety course the BoaterExam team worked in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to ensure that all the information in the course is as accurate as possible and will thoroughly prepare students for the Illinois Boating License.

The online course contains numerous state-specific sections that highlight Illinois's boating laws, rules and regulations. These sections are highlighted in blue boxes throughout the online boating safety study guide, so watch for them! The final boating safety exam will have a minimum of 10 Illinois-specific test questions that relate to these sections.

Completing the online boating safety course will allow you to obtain your Illinois Boating Education Certificate. (often mistakenly called the Illinois Boating License). The Boating Education Certificate is required for all operators between 12 and 17 years of age who wish to operate a powered vessel on Illinois waters.

Boating License or Boating Education Certificate... is there a difference?

The boater education card is proof that you have successfully completed a boating safety course. The boater education card does not expire and does not need to be renewed. Therefore, it is NOT a Illinois Boating License!
