  • The Massachusetts Environmental Police require one wearable Type I, II, III, or V PFD for each person aboard all vessels including canoes and kayaks.
    • Between September 15th and May 15th, anyone onboard a canoe or kayak must WEAR a PFD.
  • Ensure PFDs are readily accessible.
  • Massachusetts boaters are required to carry at least one Type IV (throwable device) PFD aboard any vessel 16 feet or longer.
  • Someone being towed behind the boat is considered aboard.
  • Anyone being towed behind a boat in any manner must wear a PFD.
  • All PWC occupants must be wearing their PFD while underway.
  • PFDs that are ripped or in poor condition are not considered approved.

Children: All boaters or passengers under 12 years of age must be wearing their PFD while the vessel is underway.

Education Requirement

A Massachusetts Boating Safety Certificate is required for all persons 12 through 15 years of age who wish to operate a motorboat and for all persons 16 or 17 years of age who wish to operate a PWC on Massachusetts waters.
