This course is intended for renters of watercraft in the state of Minnesota who do not already possess a valid boating education certificate but who wish to rent a boat or PWC to operate on Minnesota waters. It is valid for 180 days from completion of the exam.

Motorboats
In Minnesota, starting July 1, 2025, anyone born on or after July 1, 2004, is required to take a boater education course and receive their watercraft operator's permit before operating a motorboat on Minnesota waters.
Note: Anyone under the age of 12 may operate a motorboat with less than 75 horsepower if accompanied by a competent adult on board.
Personal Watercraft (PWC)
Anyone between the ages of 12 and 21 years must possess a valid watercraft operator's permit to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).
Note: No one under the age of 12 may operate a PWC, even with an adult on board.
