Who needs the Nevada Boater Card?

Beginning Jan. 1, 2003, boaters born on or after Jan 1, 1983 are required to complete a boater education course before operating a boat on Nevada's interstate waters. This requirement applies only to operators using a motorboat with a motor exceeding 15 horsepower. Nevada's interstate waters include Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, the Colorado River from Davis Dam south to the California state line, Lake Tahoe and Topaz Lake.

How much does the boat safety course cost?


There is a one-time fee of $39.95 paid to®. It includes unlimited attempts at the final exam.

The Certificate of Completion is a temporary proof of competency and proves that you took a boater education course and passed.


What is the Nevada Boater Education Card?


Nevada Boater Education Card (also known as the Nevada boating license or boaters license) is proof of competency of the basic rules of the water that all boaters should know. The Boater Education Card must be carried with you whenever you are operating a powered watercraft to avoid high fines.


I do not have a driver's license. Can I still get the Nevada boater license?


Yes. You are not required to have a state driver's license in order to obtain a Boater Education Card.


How can I get my Nevada boating license?


You can obtain your Nevada Boater Education Card in 4 easy steps:

  1. Pay the one-time fee of $39.95 – free unlimited retries of the final exam
  2. Study the Nevada Boaters Safety Course, and pass the final exam
  3. Print off your Certificate of Completion
  4. Receive your permanent Nevada Boater Education Card in the mail within 8-10 business days

How long is the boat safety course and boater license good for?


The boater license is good for life.


Is anyone exempt from obtaining the Nevada boating license?


No. If you are born on or after January 1, 1983, you are required to get the Nevada Boater Education Card to operate any powered watercraft over 15 hp including PWCs.


Is there a time limit to complete the online course?


You can take the online course at any time, day or night. However, courses must be completed within 90 days of payment at which time your access to the course will expire.


How many questions are on the exam?


The exam consists of 60 multiple choice questions.


What is the passing grade?


The passing grade is 80%, or 48 correct answers out of 60 questions.
